Birmingham Heritage Week

The programme for Birmingham Heritage Week has been announced. The annual series of events is celebrating 10 years of heritage and stories in the city. The majority of events are free, however some do carry a charge, so please check the info before heading out. Access information is available on the website too. The ticketed events usually sell out early, so have a browse today if you get the chance.

Highlights include:

  • Ten Acres & Stirchley Co-op History Exhibition – at Cotteridge Co-op. This photographic exhibition tells the story of TASCOS, the Ten Acres & Stirchley Co-operative Society that, from humble beginnings in 1875, grew to be the largest retail business in South West Birmingham. Organised by Birmingham Co-op History Group. Open Friday 6th Sept – Sunday 15th September, during store opening times: Monday – Saturday 7am – 8pm and Sunday 10am – 4pm. (Free, no booking required)
  • Stirchley Baths heritage open day – Saturday 7th September. Come and take a look inside Grade 2 listed Stirchley Baths which has been a well-loved part of the Stirchley community for over 100 years. A swimming baths was first proposed in 1903 and the building was opened in 1911. Plus there’s a sale of ex-library local history books (free, no booking required)
  • West Midlands Fire Service Museum – organised by West Midlands Fire Service Community Heritage Group – Visit the museum at the oldest West Midlands Fire Service Station (1923) in Aston, and see appliances and equipment from the early days of fire-fighting up to the present day. Guided tours are £4pp (under 16s free) with all monies going towards the heritage group to maintain the museum. (Booking required, various dates)
  • Small Heath and the Windrush Generation Walking Trail – Join BOFA inspire and take a step back into mid-20th century Small Heath. Discover how the area has grown over time to be the multicultural hub that it is now. At the end of the trail, you are welcome to stay and attend BOFA’s Windrush Celebration Day: Their Past, our Present (11am-4pm). The walk takes place Saturday 14th September from 9.30am–11am. (Free, book by email)
  • Museum Collection Centre open day in Nechells on Saturday 14th September from 10am-4pm. Birmingham Museums’ 1.5-hectare store, holding over 80% of the City’s collection all under one roof. Come and take part in a day of family friendly activities while exploring the artefact-packed warehouse. (ticketed)
